What’s in the Case, Dan Whitten?
This is the first of two articles on this site that are part of Volume 11 of PoolSynergy, a monthly collection of the best writing on pool. After you read them, be sure to check out the rest of the September 2010 edition of PoolSynergy for other great articles over at The Pool Tip Jar.

| Dan’s Personal Case |
Dan Whitten, a friend and founder of Whitten Cases, graciously agreed to participate in this month’s PoolSynergy by opening up his case to the world.
Dan built his first case (for himself) in 1987 when he was on a medical leave from work for 6-8 weeks. He was bored and needed something to occupy his time. When he brought it to the pool hall he was inundated by friends who wanted to buy one like it. Later, the pool hall owner ordered some for inventory and a business was born. About a year later, Dan struck a deal with Ernie Gutierrez of Gina Cues. Ernie has a standing order for cases each month, because he ships out his cues in a Whitten 1 x 2. If you know Ernie and Gina Cues, you know how much that says about Whitten Cases. Dan turned over the business to his son Joe 3 years ago.

| Dan Whitten Case Inside |
Dan’s personal case is a 3 x 6, with dark brown alligator print cowhide, trimmed with light brown alligator print.
Dan plays with a Cognoscenti, with a tulipwood butt and forearm, and a salt & pepper pressed linen wrap. He has 2 Cognoscenti shafts but only keeps one in the case. The shafts are 13 mm with Triangle tips.
His 2nd playing cue is a modified Richard Chudy jump-break. He had Richard make him a 12″ extension with a unilock joint. Dan has a Triangle tip on this cue also, and he mainly uses it for those hard to reach shots where he’d rather not use a bridge. For jumping, Dan has a Bunjee jumper.

As far as accessories go, there a good number. There’s a case and a pair of prescription glasses that Dan has pinched the nose rests to get them to sit higher on his face. He also
bought over-sized lenses to maximize his ability to see through rather than over them when down on a shot.
There’s a home made tip shaper, a standard Tip Pik, and a piece of 2400 emery cloth for cue maintenance. He also caries a Strokers towel (where he plays) and a small stack of business cards.
The one unusual item I saw was a Gripper Cue Tip Guage by Bauer.
So there you have it; what a premier case maker fills up his case with.
