Position Builder Practice Drill 05b

Centerline Drills – Two Rail Variation

This version isn’t as hard as it looks, and it will give you totally different perspective on how to move the cue ball. Many people shy away from 2 rail shape, but by really working this drill you’ll soon make it your friend.

With ball in hand, give yourself a good angle on this shot, hit it firmly with a little low right, and go around the horn of the upper left corner pocket. You want to end up above the foot line and about a spot from the rail.

The right english helps you come long off the second rail which makes hitting the position zone a little easier. The closer your cue ball path is to the length of the position zone the better.

If you’re landing right, each shot is a repetition of the one before, but further away. If you get out of line a little, use a touch of draw or follow to control your contact point with the end rail, and right to control the direction off the rails, especially off the 2nd rail.

Make the 2, go two rails and go to about the third diamond on the long rail, stopping about one diamond from the long rail.

Keep your stroke smooth and fire in the 3. Where do you want to end up? Why?

Don’t let up now, you need this to successfully complete the drill. Plan your spot for the cue ball, shoot the 4 into the hole, and stop on your destination. Simple, huh? Congratulations. Now keep up the good work and nail this down until you can complete it successfully 3 out of 5 times. Then go on to the next variation on this theme. When you’ve reached competence on all of them, try the variations on the next two pages to toughen you up for competition. And don’t forget to do all of these drills from both sides.
