Position Builder Practice Drill 01a
For each of the drills in this series you’ll be using the 1 – 6 balls and you’ll be playing them in order. You don’t need to mark the positions of all the balls, but if you put a donut one diamond up and one diamond in from each of the two corner pockets at the foot end of the table, you’ll find it makes things a little easier.
Put the 1 and 2 balls on these donuts, On the side of the table with the 1 ball, put the 5 ball 1/2 inch from the foot rail and the 3 ball 1/2 way between the two balls. Do the same on the other side, with the 6 just off the foot rail and the 4 ball 1/2 way between the 2 & 6.
You have ball in hand and have to make the 6 balls in order. Stop and redo the setup if you miss or hit any object ball other than the one you are shooting.

The simplest way to run out this drill is to use a little draw. Line the cueball up on the foot spot, shoot the 1 into the corner and draw straight back to the foot spot. That perfectly straight draw you practiced in the Stroke Builder 3 drill really comes in handy. In the diagram I’ve shown the cue ball coming back on a slight angle, so the diagram is more clear, but the straighter you can keep it the better.

Now shoot in the 2 Ball with a stop shot. This will give you a nearly straight in shot on the 3 Ball.

The 3 Ball is shot with a little draw, so as to get a nearly straight in shot on the 4.

By rolling in the 4 Ball with a little follow, you’ll keep the cue ball close to the end rail, which make the transition from the 5 to the 6 much easier.

You’re home free. Just make the 5 and keep the cue ball close to the end rail. A little outside english (left) will keep the cue away from the side rail, a small error you can keep from making if you keep your mind fully engaged. Remember, every little detail counts, on the easy shots as well as on the hard ones.

Complete the drill by making the 6. Doing the drill this way isn’t really going to teach you too much, but you should be able to do it. In a game you’ll choose the best way to run out, and in this case we just did it. But there’s a lot more to learn from this drill when you require that for the 1st 4 balls you must go to a rail to get position on the next ball. There are two more ways to run these balls and you should know them both; the long rail version and the end rail version; scroll the whole page down to read more.
